Dial By Photo is available as a free trial and it is compatible with the Palm Treo 680, Treo 700p and Treo 650. A number of members have had issues with TomTom Navigator 6 GPS working on their Treo 680. Apparently, there was a bit of code in the TomTom software that looked for the device ID of the Treo. Since it did not recognize the Treo 680, it wouldn’t launch despite being compatible. A seemingly easy enough fix, considering a member of TreoCentral provided an interim fix with a minor edit of the code. Palm has since posted a software update that provides full compatibility with TomTom 6. The Treo 750 is also supported with this release.
It appears that older Palm sync cradles made for the Treo 650 are not compatible with the new Treo 680. In fact, using a older Treo cradle with the Treo 680 can result in reduced battery life and background applications running without your knowledge. According to Palm, the older cradle may still “work” for synchronization and charging, but using it may result in erratic behavior on your smartphone. Tim Long, an analyst for Bank of America, was recently quoted as saying the Treo 750 may not show up until late January or early February. Long also noted that although the Treo 680 is selling well, but Palm is having difficulty keeping all of the colors in stock. Palm reports earnings on Tuesday.

Cingular has announced a press conference for Monday, November 12th. It’s speculated this could be the official announcement of the Treo 680 becoming available on Cingular Wireless. One can only hope this is a coming out party for both the Treo 680 and Treo 750 which also just received FCC approval.
In October, Palm announced the Treo 680 would be available in November along with plans to bring 20 carriers online with the new smartphone. Photos of the Cingular branded Treo 680 surfaced providing further clarification on which carrier would be first to release the Treo 680. The new Treo 680 is expected to retail at $199 with a 2-year contract (after rebates). No additional information is available on colors for the Cingular model. Palm will an unlocked version of the Treo 680 in crimson, copper, arctic and graphite. Discuss the release in our Treo 680 forum.

Thanks Brighthand!
The leaks surrounding the release of new Treos continued with a new Cingular rebate form making the rounds. Found on Cingular’s website, the rebate clearly shows $100 rebates on available on the forthcoming Treo 680 and rumored Palm Treo 750. What’s more, they are both being offered without a camera. While the Treo 680 was expected to be released on or around November 5th, the Treo 750 release comes sooner than expected. Not formally announced by Palm, previous reports had this model coming early next year. This holiday season, it appears as though consumers will have their choice between Palm OS or Windows Mobile and $100 rebate to boot. The rebate is valid from November 5 through December 30th. Still no sign of the Palm Treo 680, but you can discuss the release in our Treo 680 forum.

It seems that a PowerPoint presentation fell into the hands of the publishers of Engadget that all but confirms Cingular will be the first to carry the Treo 680. The specifications are no different from those currently found at Palm.com: Palm OS 5.4.9 with that new five-tabbed quick access (dial pad, favorites, home screen, contacts, call log), quad-band GSP / GPRS / EDGE, 312MHz XScale processor, 2.2-inch 320 x 320 display, SDIO, Bluetooth 1.2, IR, PocketTunes, 1200mAh battery, and a 4.41 x 2.36 x 0.88-inch body weighing in at 5.28 ounces.
Engadget also posted a photo of the Treo 680 and it appears that it might be available in both graphite and black. Graphite was one of the colors that was announced at launch, but a Black Treo 680 would be a revelation and reminiscent of the Black-Tie Treo. Discuss the Treo 680 in our forums.
